Birth Control Pills Work By:
-stopping the monthly release of an
ovum from the ovaries
-altering the lining of the uterus
-creating a thick cervical mucus that
hampers the movement of sperm into the uterus
-the pill is a combination of
estrogen and progestin.
Advantages
-Able to have uninterrupted sex
-Very effective if taken as directed
-Regulates your periods and may

Disadvantages
-Offers no protection against STI’s
(always use a condom)
-Effectiveness may be reduced if you
are taking other medication, or if you forget or take your pill late
-You may experience minor temporary
side effects such as nausea, fluid retention, breakthrough bleeding, tender
breast, mood changes and weight gain. Often these symptoms resolve after the
first 3 months.
-If you are a smoker you should
discuss the possibility of increased health risks with your physician.

To Start Your First Package Of Birth
Control Pills
Start your first package of bcps on
the Sunday after your period starts. If your period starts on a Sunday, start
the pills that day.
On a 28 pill pack, 1 hormone pill is
taken for 21 days. The 1 reminder (sugar) pill is taken daily for 7 days. Begin
a new pack the next day, not missing any days. Your period will come while you
are on the reminder pills.
On a 21 pill pack, 1 hormone pill is
taken daily for 21 days and then no pills are taken for 7 days. Start your new
package on the 8th day. You will have your period in the week you
are off the bcps.
Take your bcp at approximately the
same time every day.
A pregnancy could happen:
-During the 1st month on
the pill
-If you ran out or stop taking them
-When the pill is taken late or you
forgot tot take it.
-If you have vomiting and diarrhea
-If you take other medications that
may decrease the effectiveness of the Pill
To avoid pregnancy during these times
abstain from intercourse or use condoms every time until you start your next
package of pills.
