Heavy Cigarette smokers are at increased risk of hearing loss, according to a study in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, official publication of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine
The risk of loss in the high-frequency range increases with the number of cigarettes and the duration of smoking .
Smoking may have a direct effect on hearing, or it may cause damage by decreasing blood flow to the structures involved in hearing. Smoker’s general health is less and effected in many ways by smoking and it is possible that this accounts for their higher risk of hearing loss.
